FE10: 1-8 Vika

I took a look for this for a fic I'm working on and thought you all might find it interesting too.

In case you were wondering, Vika's Japanese name is "biize"

CharacterEnglishJapaneseMy Rough Translation
VikaHm... I wonder where Boss is? These tents all look the same...

I wonder where Boss0 and the others are?
The beorcs' tents

VikaNo, I'm so sorry. I can't explain why this happens. I get so jumpy around you. There's just... something about you.……
... I'm sorry.
I don't really understand it myself, but
for some reason... [yes,] a little.
MicaiahOh...そうですか……▼ Is that so...
VikaOh, but please don't be sad! It's not you. It's me. I get... confused... sometimes. I really admire you, and then I get a bizarre feeling, and...

Her expression is so gentle, isn't it.
VikaCarry it with you. It'll bring you good luck. I met my boss and Muarim thanks to that figurine.

I definitely owe it to this, you see.
MicaiahThank you, Vika. I'll cherish it.
Thank you, Vika.
I'll treasure it.
VikaI'm glad you like it. うん。▼Yeah.4

0 Her name for Tormod.
1 Ie, don't look so sad. And yes, "It's not even your fault" really does take up that much space in the Japanese -- hyperliterally, "and that it is particularly your responsibility is not the case" :P
2 Grammatically it's not really "let's be friends," but "please make me your friend" sounds ... bizarre in English.
3 The term really is paraphrased -- here it's 女神像, while the item is 女神の像. :P
4 I'm pretty sure this is Vika's really awkward way of saying "you're welcome". But she basically is just mumbling in assent.

Noteworthy things:

The Japanese text is intriguingly detailed about the kind of weird feeling laguz have about branded here.

Also, Vika fears being ignored rather than feared, which ties in well with the game's overall focus on loneliness, and ties in with Soren's remarks on the topic. As for why NoA changed it -- I suspect it has to do with the fact that American awareness regarding -isms tends to focus on fear and hatred. While those who take an interest in social issues discuss silence and exclusion, it is not as much as part of the layman consciousness of the issue as much as I suspect probably is in Japan. (They're big on matters of exclusion.)

the focus on being ignored/focus on loneliness/etc and the connection to how Japanese culture views the -ism thing is a really interesting observation. thanks for sharing (and thanks for the translation)!
