RD 3-3 "Strategist"
Partly because I'm curious, and partly because the one thing I can always seem to find the motivation to do is translation.
1 And Ranulf is (jokingly, I think) not pleased with this development.
2 Literally "Lord staff officer of the Greil Mercenaries."
3 Referring to Skrimir, I think.
4 He also emphasizes that this is in contrast to what he said earlier (Soren isolating himself less).
5 Not totally sure about this line (specifically, the interpretation of "ni") but I think this is probably close. NoA is probably right in its interpretation.
6 He is not actually saying "man" but it has that vibe.
7 I was agonizing over how to best render this. Then I saw the official translation and I was like THAT'S PERFECT. So yeah, I didn't come up with this. But it's a very faithful translation of the vibe of Ranulf's remark.
Fun fact: No one addresses Soren by name in this entire conversation.
SHH, HE'LL HEAR YOU--
Character | English | Japanese | My Rough Translation |
Tibarn | Your strategist is something else. Does he have some kind of magic hat that he pulls all his crazy ideas out of? ▼ | But see, this plan he's thought of ain't shabby at all.% Your bunch's staff officer, I mean. |
Ike | Well, I do pay him plenty for them. ▼ | Yeah, thanks to him we're saved. |
Titania | Soren said this mission would fail without help from the Phoenicis Army. We're asking you to take a very big risk, King Tibarn. ▼ ただ、鷹の民の方々には 危険な役目を担っていただきますが……▼ | If we hadn't joined with Phoenicis's forces, we would've said that this plan wasn't feasible. However, we're asking those of the falcon people to assume a risky role for us...% |
Tibarn | We can handle it. We can do anything if it involves teaching those vermin in Begnion a thing or two. I wonder what you'd have to do to see those in Begnion's forces break into tears? %3 |
Ranulf | Soren has even answered some of Skrimir's more insane requests. He doesn't listen to a word I say, but when Soren talks strategy, he's all ears. ▼ | He has my thanks for responding to Skrimir's absurd requests, too.% It looks like that guy's also put his trust in your Lord Staff Officer's plan.% |
Ike | Is that why he hasn't been complaining during the briefings? ▼ | Come to think of it, lately he's been participating seriously in the war councils. |
Ranulf | He says he looks forward to what the little strategist will say next. It looks to me like Soren's charmed his way into the most powerful position in this army. ▼ | I hear it's because he enjoys seeing what the "Little Strategist" will say next.% ... Somehow, he's completely taken hold of this army,1 that staff officer of yours.2 |
Titania | I'm glad to hear it. He's changed, hasn't he? ▼ | Hehe, he's changed, hasn't he?3 That child as well. |
Ranulf | Yeah, I think so. He still doesn't say much, but he's a lot more at ease these days. He used to be completely closed off, rejecting anyone who tried to get close. Like he'd lock himself away, all alone in his own little world. ▼ | Yeah. His words are as cutting as always, but... % that air he had, as if to reject other people, seems to have faded. Or, maybe it's like... standing in the same place, before me was one person who was living in another world -- that's the feeling I got.4 |
Ike | We all lost and gained something during the Mad King's War. Maybe it wasn't a complete waste, after all. ▼ | The war from three years ago-- it's not that we left nothing behind. Everyone lost something, and in doing so, gained something. |
Ranulf | Do you think we'll feel the same way about this war when it's over? | … When this war ends, will we feel that way as well?% |
Ike | Who knows? We'll have to survive it first. ▼ | I wonder. For now, because5 we're trying to survive I don't know, man.6 |
Ranulf | Fair enough. | ……だな。▼ | ... Fair enough.7 |
