Translation: Gods' End
The English version of this cutscene is very different from the Japanese. Serenes Forest has a translation that's much closer, although it's still a little more liberal than I personally prefer. So here, have this.
Original videos: English Japanese ("The Goddesses' Disappearance" -- I actually like the English transliteration on this one.)
Also, I did reference the SF translation when I was a little confused, so credit to them.
Ike's voice is quite nuanced in here and I haven't tried too hard to make that evident in this close/rough translation. His way of talking is manly and contracted (think lots of can't instead of cannot), but there's a note of reverence you usually don't get with Ike.
This is written line-by-line as usual, but you can tell that the entire conversation was restructured, probably for the sake of lip syncing.
1 My guess is that she's trailing off from a line that would be something like, "That's why I believe I have already stayed too long" or something to that effect.
2 Judging by her slight nod in the video, I think this is a hesitant "yes" to Ike's earlier proposal. (This is one of those things where it works as ambiguous in the Japanese, but you have to choose an interpretation and stick with it for it to work the same way in English. :|)
3 You have no idea how tempted I am to translate this as "crappy shit." It's literally like, word for crappy + word for tthings

I really like the parent-child comparison. Very Old Testament. Kinda weird how it goes from "you're like a parent and you're not perfect and that's okay" to "you're an ideal to aspire to". Seeing all these subtle differences is pretty cool.

(Anonymous) 2017-08-31 04:40 am (UTC)(link)I decided to check here first as I recall you were doing quite a few of the cutscenes, and great that you did this one!
Though, the part with:
"どこかで交わるかもしれん"
I took to mean "we will likely find some sort of common ground" (along the lines of "meet halfway" rather than literally meet each other again), which would also line up more with what the official localization chose to do. It would give the overall meaning of: "If we don't run/ignore the bad things that happen, [aka, tackle them head on], we'll probably reach common ground."
Great work! I understand it's an old post, sorry I'm seeing and commenting on it five years later!
