NOTE: % at the end of a line means that the above two lines correspond to those two lines in the Japanese taken together, but not each to their corresponding line. (That is, some elements were transposed to make the translation more natural.)

*1 EDIT 6/7/14: This word is "nakama," which I had originally decided to put down awkwardly as "comrade," but I really think "one of them" is closer to the spirit of the word.

*1 I have deliberately left this word untranslated because the nuances are important for understanding Soren's reply. Nakama is often rendered as "friend(s)," but more strictly means something like in-group, the group among which someone belongs, or another member thereof.
*2 So here, Soren's response means that he has never felt like he belonged among any group of people. This is different from claiming that he has not had any meaningful personal relationships (I don't think he's throwing away Ike with this line -- discussion) -- it means that he's felt like he's never "fit in" anywhere.
Intepretively, this exchange is something like:
