Kent/Sain Supports

Commissioned by harblkun, whose love for FE7 is undying. She wanted to see me (re-)translate some of the FE7 supports, with copious notes for all the things that might've fallen through the cracks.

To that end, I did these translations blind to form my own opinion of the text, and then added in the localization for comparison later. As such, some of the differences you see may just be stylistic differences between myself and Treehouse, so don't take the difference between "Ah, Kent!" and "Ho, if it isn't Kent!" too seriously.

Kent:
Sain!セイン!▼Sain!
Sain:
Ah, Kent!お、ケントじゃないか!▼Ho, if it isn't Kent!
Kent:
Take it easy out there, all right? We’re not the only ones fighting here, you know? Feel free to let Lord Eliwood face the enemy now and again.あまり無理を

But to do that,
shouldn't I give them a show of
my beautiful performance?
Kent:
For whom do you intend to “show off”?・・・誰に見せるんだ?▼... Showing who, exactly?
Sain:

Kent:

... Sigh.3
You haven't changed at all.
Why in the world
do you only ever dedicate yourself
to this sort of thing,
disregarding even your own safety?4
Sain:
I’ll be fine, Mother! And I’m off!大丈夫、大丈夫!

It's fine, it's fine!
I'll go on ahead!!
Kent:
Sain, wait! What a bloody fool…お、おいセイン!▼
まったく・・・
しょうがない奴だ!▼
H-hey! Sain!
Sigh...
there's no helping that fool!

1 Even though Kent is speaking to Sain using plain (non-formal) forms, as buddies, there's something ridiculously stately about the way he structures his sentences. Anyway, I don't think the Japanese necessarily has Kent saying "save some enemies for Eliwood," just that Sain should take the others into consideration. That could mean anything from "save them some xp" to a more likely "stop overextending, ruining our formations, and forcing us to make an early charge to save you, while distracting us from other allies who may need our help."

2 The possessive pronouns like "our" aren't there textually in the Japanese. Japanese grammar doesn't demand their presence. I'm filling it in myself that Sain is speaking to Kent in a buddy-buddy you-and-me way, and not only for himself.

3 For the sake of consistency, I've rendered "mattaku" as "sigh" pretty much everywhere here. If I were to localize this for real, I'd probably alternate between "for heaven's sakes" etc.

4 It's interesting that Treehouse left out Kent's concern for Sain's safety, considering that it's explicit in the original.

5 To be clear, this "our" is actually textual.

6 These two lines almost feel like an aside for Sain, as if he's half responding to what Kent said about guarding one's lord, and half talking to himself about Kent.

7 Literally "senpai".

8 The word he uses here is "koi", for the crush-y, passionate, lusty flavor of love.

9 His stutter is seriously intense. Like, I think the "Abloobloobloo" meme might actually be in-character for this guy.

10 Literally "aibou".

11 I don't think Kent would use this kind of expression in English but it's the closest to the literal meaning here.

12 This kind of sentence fragment, with the verb implied, is pretty common in Japanese. If I were localizing I'd probably render this more like, "I am simply doing my duty..." or something. Treehouse's solution is pretty perfect actually.

13 This use of love is "suki," casual crushy flirty like-love.

14 The word he uses literally means (horse-mounted) knight but is also used for the FE7 cavalier class. I chose to render it as "knight" since it's invoking the age-old idea of the romantic knight on horseback.

15 This use of love is "ai," serious deep love. (But it's Sain, so how serious can he be?)

16 The Japanese idiom used here is actually literally like "taking off one layer of clothing," used to mean "pitch in and help," and while I can imagine in this context of that anime trope where someone tosses away their jacket to mean that they're joining the fight, I can't help but laugh at the mental image of Sain being like "brb taking off my shirt for you".

17 Literally all that's here is "We'll call out to the girls, and in one great..." but Kent cuts him off, and unfortunately, in Japanese the verb comes at the end of the sentence but in English it comes in the middle. Treehouse apparently thinks it's "we'll call the girls and have one great party" while my first impression was "we'll catcall the girls and in one big stampede..." (perhaps because I can't imagine Sain actually knowing enough girls who would take up his invitation to a party).

18 Literally "It's your bad habit again, Sain."

19 Sentence fragment again. "Even Lady Lyndis...". I autocompleted this sentence to "You've never even confessed your love for Lady Lyndis (for pessimistic fear of failure)" in my head and couldn't see it any other way until I saw the localization. Grammatically it could also be "That's why Lady Lyndis never found out how you feel" or "That's why Lady Lyndis never returned your calls, you moodkiller" or as Treehouse seems to have read it.

20 The original idiom used here is literally something like "to have your feet swept out from under you", meaning that one succumbs in a fight to a tricky dirty move. In English it ironically sounds too much like the romantic idiom "swept off your feet".

21 The original order in the Japanese text is what I've written here--Sain says "You have me," first. But to Treehouse's credit, I originally mistakenly wrote "I have you" first, considering that Sain just got done saying that he himself isn't alone. IMO the localization's order reads better than the original.

22 Literally "it's as you say," but I like "that is true" because I feel like Kent is conceding a point to Sain at this point in the conversation.

23 This last exchange sounds more hardcore than it really is. Sain's parting "tanomu" and Kent's response here of "makasete oke" is a pretty standard JRPG exchange. It's just that moment in the shounen anime where two guys exchange meaningful eye contact and nods. The Treehouse solution is pretty good.

Your notes are so good...and this formatting is delicious. (I wish I was good at things like that, but I don't wish it enough to actually try and...get good at it. ;P) And of course you had to mention "abloobloobloo" which only resurrects this old gif of someone on LJ's art from many years ago. :')
