I have never before gone with my first idea for a prompt. It's always been the second or third or even fourth that came late into the round that ultimately made things happen. But this one was my first idea for once, although this final version resulted from my third attempt to start it.

Originally, it was much more focused around the idea of Levin's geis (which Serenes Forest didn't translate completely accurately). This is still very important, but I like it this way, less explicitly.

My first two attempts were much more ... labored, to put it gently. The first two paragraphs of the first draft, for example, looked like this.

He had taken the route by the castle wall on a whim. It was dangerous for him to linger so close to the guards – he wore the face of Silesian royalty after all – but his whims were never trivial since Barhara. Almost noteworthy, that he had been led back to Barhara.

Now he skirts along one wall and listens. He finds it there, in the bushes. He finds her there: a girl not more than ten years old, half her flesh ruptured in circular patterns – wounds from dark magic. She is what he came for; he is not surprised.

After a more or less equally bad second draft, I ditched it altogether in favor of a Lute/Marisa fic that I had been tossing out since Crack Pairing, and went three scenes strong into that when it simply... crashed. (It may yet see the light of day once I figure out what the middle is supposed to look like.)

By the time it'd crashed I'd already begged for an extension so I felt bad about not submitting anything. So I gave some thought again to the Levin idea, which was originally supposed to be something about Levin being a cold daddy until he comes across a situation in which he has to make Julia laugh, or something cheesy like that. A few days of thought actually brought me around to a more cohesive idea that I liked quite a lot, even though its relevance to the prompt had changed entirely. The essential themes and timeframe I'd wanted in the first two drafts carried over, but the only tangible thing that carried over was the Fury flashback (here, used while Levin carries Julia to Silesia). It was basically the only strong part of the first two drafts.

Jugdral is basically home to the most messed up family situations in the series. I'd started thinking about Levin in this light influenced to some degree by this piece by TwinMoons. But more than the hypothetical matter of Finn and his Thracia-confirmed child, even the game depicts radical differences in Levin's attitude.

Levin:
Yuria, come over here for a sec.

Levin:
I found her in Barhara when she was real little. She was hurt pretty bad.
So I took her to a remote area of Silesia and have been taking care of her all this time.
But things there got a little too hairy for my taste, so we made our way here.
But now I have to go to Lenster and... well, she's slowing me down a bit.
Celice...
I hate to burden you, but can you take her off my hands for a little while?
I think she's been through quite a bit.
She hasn't a single memory of what happened to her before I picked her up.

He may be a bit overly-rational in the wake of her disappearance, but he's so openly tender. As opposed to,

Levin:
Sety, I left my family a long time ago for a reason... Just deal with it, okay?

and,

Levin:
Fee, look, I'm sorry about Fury...
But what went on between the two of us is really none of yours or Sety's damn business!

Fee:
Father!

Levin:
Fee, the only thing you need to concern yourself with is winning this war! Got it!?

I started to type up meta but I decided not to. Take it as you will.

Although it's canonical that Levin and Fury had some sort of falling out, I think the cause runs much deeper than some matter of basic incompatibility.

I learned while writing this that the timeline for Silesia is hugely complicated by Karin's lines in Thracia 776. Man, Thracia, making Fury miraculously survive and become Queen. I don't even know man. First Jugdral fic! Oh, the tribulations of writing for a game you know less well.

*... has played FE4 at least four times by now. is a loser.*

But I've wanted to write about Levin for a bit, and I'm quite happy with the result. I also want to do something with Alvis, but we'll see. Someday, maybe.

Spoilers for the fic above. Massive spoilers for FE4 below.

Jugdral Cheat Sheet
(Things you need to know for this fic)

I think the fic stands okay as a story by itself, but if you want context, here is all the context. Warning: This is about as long as the fic. :P

FE4 is a game played out across two generations. In the first generation, you follow Sigurd and crew in a journey to find out wtf happened to his father, and also attempt to warn people about some Grandbellian nobles' attempts to seize rule of the country for themselves.

Something that will be important later: Sigurd falls in love at first sight with a shaman girl named Diadora, who for some reason isn't allowed to interact with the outside world. In any event they fall in love and have a son named Celice before Diadora is ~mysteriously~ kidnapped by a shady guy in a cloak.

During this generation you meet Levin (bottom left), runaway Prince of Silesia, who'd ditched court to roam around as a bard because he was tired of his uncles trying to kill him. He joins your cause apparently because he rather agrees with Sigurd's moral scruples, even though the conflict doesn't really concern Silesia yet (I think), but over the course of the first generation things get hairy and the army ends up retreating to Silesia.

In Silesia, Levin makes up with his Queen mother. After the death of everyone's favorite pegasus knight the captain of the Silesian pegasus knights who Levin used to be into, Levin decides to be a responsible person. Thus his mother entrusts him with their family's divine tome, Holsety.

As with all other instances of characters with major holy blood touching their respective divine weapon, Levin seems to have a brush with Holsety at the time, which I believe in a way suggests what it might have been like to eventually be resurrected by him (more on that later).

Levin:
So this is our family's Book of Holsety! Eraagh... What power! Where's this heat coming from?

Lahna:
Levin, please remember the Wind Crusader flows like a cool breeze guiding all living beings to the path of peace.
His way is never to be confused with violence.

Levin:
Yes, I understand now. That is the only way I could hope to live my life.

So anyway, Sigurd and party make their way through Grandbell to put down the revolt once and for all. But Velthomer suddenly sides with them -- General Aida says that Alvis knew his innocence all along. So, Sigurd and army parade over to Barhara to meet with Alvis. There, surrounded by fire mages, Alvis betrays them. Before he launches the attack however, he "introduces" them to an amnesiac Diadora, his soon-to-be wife, not knowing that she'd been formerly married (and not giving Sigurd time to tell him). Then the meteor spells are cast. Almost all of the first generation ends up dead or imprisoned.

It's a little ambiguous how the characters who survive survived. The Fire Emblem Treasure interview with Kaga sheds a lot of light on this. (I've corrected the translation a bit from the Serenes Forest version.)

----Next, I think I would like to ask a little more about the contents of the game. First, Levin. As for him, Levin in the first half and Levin in the second half is completely different for both gameplay and storyline. Anyways, even if Levin dies in the first half, he comes back in the second half regardless. Celice even states in the end that Levin is the warrior "Holsety of the Wind" from a distant country. At this point, it feels like Levin is Levin and not Levin at the same time. Is there anything you can comment?

Realistically, Levin held a destiny where he was supposed to die, but the Dragon race--The gods that descended during the miracle at Darna Fortress was actually of the Dragon race--intervened and he was kept alive. At that time, by entering a Geis -- a contract that can be seen in Celtic mythology -- with the Dragon race, Levin is living as Levin.

This means that there's no doubt that the Levin in the second half is basically the same person as Levin in the first half. However, he's given a part of himself to Holsety... And, when the Holy War ends, Holsety actually leaves, but because of the Geis, Levin can't live as Levin so to speak, and cannot retain his original existence so he cannot go back to Silesia and take the crown.

That is why this part is a discordance where the dragon race who had a law to not intervene with the human race did what they are usually not supposed to do--saving a person who was supposed to die.

Actually, other characters who appeared in the first half are in a similar placement. This means that not everyone died, but they are also not allowed to intervene with the glorious acts of the children's generation, so they do not appear in the second half.

So basically, Levin is like Jesus.

The second half of the game follows the second generation -- the kids of the characters in the first half. Although the game allows you to pair characters with tremendous freedom (albeit some pairings are easier to make and have more conversations), Thracia 776 implies certain pairings (Levin/Fury (top right) being one of them).

I think the Kaga interview is a perfect explanation of Levin's behavior in the second generation. He's bizarrely cold. He loathes the way he's lived since Barhara,

Celiceえ? ・・・あっ、レヴィン!!

・・・シレジアのレヴィン王・・・▼
Eh? ... Ah! Levin!!
... No, I mean
... King Levin of Silesia...
Levin

Just like in the old days, "Levin" is fine.
Silesia... after the Battle of Barhara,
it was captured by the empire.

Even now, I'm
being so openly disgraceful in this way, but

Silesia, together with my mother,
perished with their pride intact.

As for me, even until now, like in old times, I'm a stupid bard.
I don't know what Oifaye has told you, but
no matter what, never call me King!

I translated this myself because the fan patch takes a lot of liberties with his script here.

... and yet that's how he's been until now all the same. It's up for speculation, but I think both the trauma of Barhara and the obligation he has now to Holsety have to do with it.

In any event, one of the first things he does when Celice meets him in the second gen is dump Julia on their party.

Levin:
I found her in Barhara when she was real little. She was hurt pretty bad.
*
So I took her to a remote area of Silesia and have been taking care of her all this time.
But things there got a little too hairy for my taste, so we made our way here.
But now I have to go to Lenster and... well, she's slowing me down a bit.
Celice...
I hate to burden you, but can you take her off my hands for a little while?
I think she's been through quite a bit.
She hasn't a single memory of what happened to her before I picked her up.

*(Note: The Japanese didn't explicitly state she was hurt, but it's a very valid interpretation of Levin's line here.)

I think Levin's lines here basically fill you in on everything else you need to know. Although if you want to know what happened to Julia... you find that out very late in the game.

Yuria:
Father...

Alvis:
Yuria, I've been awful to you. You must hate me by now. Can you ever forgive me?

Yuria:
Father! I've never felt that way about you!
I've always thought of you as a kind man.

Alvis:
No... I've been such a fool. Manfroy's been using me all along.
But by the time I realised what was going on, it was too late.
Yurius is the reincarnation of the Dark Lord Loputousu.
He murdered my beloved Diadora and had the same fate in store for you...

Yuria:
Yes. Mother used her last drop of energy to warp me away from Yurius.
I must have lost my memories over the shock of it all. I'm glad Levin found me.
But I still just break down and cry when I think about what Yurius did to mother...

I think that's everything you need to know. ♥ What follows are some things that I think are nice to know, in case you want it.

Here's Yuria's confrontation with her aforementioned brother, Yurius.

Yurius:
Greetings, Yuria.
Do you remember who I am?

Yuria:
...Yurius.

Yurius:
Ha! Your memory is still intact... And to think it's been 7 years.

Yuria:
Yes, I remember it all now...
...as if it were yesterday.

Yurius:
Heh heh... I suppose you've some fond memories of your mother, as well.

Yuria:
...
Just who are you?
Everything changed the day Archbishop Manfroy brought that eerie black book in.
That day also marks the last I saw of my dear brother...
All that remained in his place was this powerful, yet demonic child.
You... whoever you are... have deprived me of my mother and my brother, as well!
Who are you!?
Why must you put me through this agony!?

In case you were wondering how they end up...

Julia, who's canonically been crushing on Celice all this time, hangs around at court being awkward while Celice marries someone else.

O. If Julia is alive :

Levin : Yes, you and Julia are, after all, the only successors to the throne who inherited the blood of the royal family. You two have the last wishes of those who died to fulfill, and they are watching over you even now. Don’t ever forget the light they strove for.

Celice : Yes…..I understand, King Levin. I’ll be trying as hard as the limits of my strength will allow.

Levin : And you also agree with this, Julia?

Julia : Yes, Lord Levin. Helping Sir Celice…I mean, my brother, is my wish. No matter what troubles I face, I’ll run away no longer…

[If Celice has a lover]

Julia : Lady [charname], let’s help Sir Celice together, shall we?

Lover : Yes, and gladly! But Lady Julia, you…

Julia : I’m going to atone for the sins done to Lord Sigurd, and all the crimes in which he was wrongly accused. It is my mother Diadora’s wish…

Unless she died in the last chapter.

Levin : Celice, don’t let her death be in vain. That girl bore her tragic fate and continued to struggle with it. In that, she had inherited the heart of the Lady Diadora, who was always grieving in her past mistakes. Understand, Celice, that you have the last wishes of the dead to fulfill, and they are watching over you even now. Don’t ever forget the light they strove for.

Levin, as earlier mentioned, wanders off and vanishes from history.

Levin : ...Well, Celice, I hate to say goodbye, but it’s time for me to go on my journey, too.

Celice : Levin...thank you...you’ve always watched over us young people. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Levin : I only did the duty that was expected out of me. I am the wind, a wind whose breath is meant to guide the warm radiance of light. And that light is there in the heart of each and every one of you.

Celice : Yes, I understand now. I’ve always heard that Dragonkind fears involvement in the world of Man...but you’re different. You broke that rule. You guided us. I, everyone, everything in this earth, will never forget the debt we owe you, Levin...no...warrior of a distant land, Holsety of the Wind...

I guess that's touching. Personally I find their fates very sad. Here's some cute Levin and Yuria art from Thracia, for happiness.
